Parliament Approves Appointment of Former IGP Sovula, Four Others

The Parliament of Sierra Leone has approved the appointment of former Inspector General of Police, Michael Ambrose Sovula, alongside four other presidential nominees to serve in various key national institutions.

Sovula was approved as Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the National Commission on Arms and Ammunition.

Also approved by Parliament were Ahmed Saybom Kanu as Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Ibrahim Abubakarr as Chairman of the Professional Social Work Regulatory Council, as well as the Director of the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education (NCTVE) and members appointed to serve on the NCTVE Council.

Presenting the nominees before Parliament, Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Bashiru Silikie, said all nominees submitted by President Julius Maada Bio had met the necessary requirements for their respective positions. He noted that the nominees possessed the required academic qualifications, professional competence, and experience to effectively discharge their duties.

During the debate, Members of Parliament from both the ruling and opposition benches expressed support for the nominees and urged them to serve with dedication and integrity. Lawmakers called on the appointees to bring meaningful reforms and positive changes to their respective institutions in the interest of national development.

Speaking after the approval, the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Sengepoh Solomon Thomas, encouraged the nominees to render selfless service to the nation. He emphasized the need for commitment and patriotism, noting that Sierra Leone has faced numerous challenges over the years and that the contributions of the newly approved officials would play a significant role in advancing the country’s development.

The approvals form part of the government’s efforts to strengthen key institutions and enhance service delivery across various sectors of national governance.
