Parliament Endorses Former Police Chief Sovula and Four Others for Key National Positions

Sierra Leone’s Parliament has unanimously approved the appointment of former Inspector General of Police, Michael Ambrose Sovula, together with four other nominees selected by President Julius Maada Bio to serve in strategic public offices.

Among those endorsed is Sovula, who will assume the role of Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the National Commission on Arms and Ammunition.

Parliament also confirmed Ahmed Saybom Kanu as Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Ibrahim Abubakarr as Chairman of the Professional Social Work Regulatory Council, and approved the appointment of the Director of the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education (NCTVE) along with members nominated to serve on the council.

Introducing the nominees before the House, Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Bashiru Silikie stated that all individuals nominated by President Bio had successfully met the required standards for appointment. He noted that their educational backgrounds, professional expertise, and track records made them suitable for their respective positions.

Contributing to the debate, lawmakers from both the government and opposition sides of Parliament congratulated the nominees and urged them to carry out their responsibilities with commitment, professionalism, and a strong sense of national duty. Members emphasized the need for the appointees to drive positive reforms and improve service delivery within their institutions.

Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Sengepoh Solomon Thomas, also addressed the newly approved officials, encouraging them to dedicate themselves to serving Sierra Leone. He remarked that the nation has endured numerous challenges and stressed that their contributions could play a vital role in advancing development and improving the lives of citizens.

The approvals are expected to strengthen governance and enhance the effectiveness of key institutions across the country.
