Poland will receive a $4 billion loan from the United States to acquire American military equipment, the Polish defence ministry said.
Defence minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said the agreement would enable Poland to assume greater responsibility for European security.
The loan, equivalent to €3.44 billion, is provided under the U.S. Foreign Military Financing programme.
Mr Kosiniak-Kamysz said the funds would be used to purchase U.S. military equipment, including Abrams tanks, F-16 fighter jets and Apache helicopters.
U.S. under secretary of state Thomas DiNanno said the agreement was Poland’s sixth contract under the FMF programme.
The latest loan brings the total value of U.S. FMF loans to Poland to about €17.2 billion.
Poland, a NATO and European Union member, is a major supporter of Ukraine and has significantly expanded its military capabilities amid perceived security threats from Russia.
