APC MP Ibrahim Barrie Raises Economic, Education And Governance Concerns In Presidential Address Debate

All People’s Congress (APC) Member of Parliament Ibrahim Barrie has called for greater accountability in government policies, raising concerns over the economy, education, youth drug abuse and infrastructure during the opening of a four-day parliamentary debate on the President’s Address.

Barrie, who was selected by the APC leadership to open the debate on behalf of the main opposition, delivered his contribution during the State Opening of the Fourth Session of the Sixth Parliament, focusing on issues affecting the livelihoods of Sierra Leoneans.

He argued that improvements in macroeconomic indicators must translate into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens, particularly through lower food prices, affordable transportation and increased purchasing power.

He also called for greater transparency in petroleum pricing and fuel subsidy management, urging the government to establish a sustainable framework that protects consumers while safeguarding public resources.

On agriculture, Barrie urged the government to strengthen its Feed Salone initiative by investing in mechanisation, irrigation, storage facilities, processing and market access, arguing that increased production alone would not guarantee food security without making locally produced rice competitive.

He also highlighted the need to improve teachers’ welfare through timely salary payments, professional development and better working conditions, describing educators as central to the country’s education reform efforts.

Addressing the country’s drug crisis, the opposition lawmaker called for a comprehensive national response that combines prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration, alongside stronger action against drug trafficking networks.

On infrastructure, he raised concerns about road conditions and safety, particularly along the Masiaka-Kabala corridor, and called for greater transparency in road construction contracts, timely project completion and improved maintenance.

Barrie further emphasised the importance of parliamentary oversight and responsible management of public funds, urging the government to act on recommendations contained in reports by the Auditor-General.

He maintained that the opposition’s role extends beyond criticising government policies to examining their implementation, identifying shortcomings and proposing alternative solutions.

The APC lawmaker said Sierra Leoneans needed measurable improvements in their living conditions rather than repeated government announcements, adding that his party would support policies that deliver meaningful benefits while demanding accountability where implementation falls short.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to representing the interests of his constituents in Bombali District and advancing issues affecting the wider population through parliamentary engagement.
