Anti-Corruption Commission Launches Probe Into Sierra Leone Law School Following Formal Complaint

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has formally announced the commencement of an investigation into the Sierra Leone Law School following a complaint filed by the Council of Legal Education, also known as the governing authority of the institution.

In a detailed press release issued from its headquarters at Integrity House, Tower Hill in Freetown, the Commission confirmed that the complaint was lodged against the Director of the Sierra Leone Law School, Dr. Abu Bakarr Bangura. The ACC stated that it has taken immediate steps to review the allegations and has officially opened an investigation into the matter.

According to the Commission, the investigation has already begun and is expected to be concluded within a period of one month, provided that all parties involved fully cooperate with investigators. The ACC emphasised that cooperation from all stakeholders will be crucial in ensuring that the inquiry is conducted efficiently, transparently, and without unnecessary delays.

The Commission noted that the decision to investigate reflects its unwavering commitment to enforcing accountability and addressing allegations of misconduct within public institutions in Sierra Leone. It stressed that no individual or institution is exempt from scrutiny where credible allegations of wrongdoing are concerned.

Reaffirming its statutory mandate, the ACC stated that it remains resolute in its mission to curb corruption in all forms across the public sector, adding that it will continue to pursue cases that may undermine integrity, transparency, and good governance in the country.

The Commission also used the opportunity to call on all parties connected to the case to fully cooperate with investigators. It explained that cooperation is essential to ensure that facts are properly established and that due process is followed in reaching a fair and just conclusion.

While the Commission did not provide further details regarding the specific nature of the complaint, it reiterated that investigations are conducted in strict adherence to legal procedures and established protocols, ensuring that the rights of all individuals involved are respected throughout the process.

The ACC further urged the public to remain patient and allow the investigative process to run its course, warning against speculation or the spread of unverified information that could interfere with or compromise the integrity of the investigation.

In its statement, the Commission also reaffirmed its broader mandate to strengthen public trust in governance by promoting transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct within public institutions. It stated that consistent enforcement of anti-corruption laws is essential to building a system where public resources are managed responsibly and for the benefit of citizens.

The development has drawn attention across the legal and governance space in Sierra Leone, given the role of the Law School in training legal practitioners who go on to serve in various capacities within the justice system. As such, the outcome of the investigation is expected to be closely followed by stakeholders in the legal profession and beyond.

The ACC reiterated that its operations are guided by fairness, impartiality, and a commitment to due process, ensuring that all investigations are handled with the highest level of professionalism. It assured the public that it would provide updates where necessary as the investigation progresses.

The Commission concluded by reaffirming its dedication to its core mandate of fighting corruption and safeguarding public trust, noting that accountability remains a cornerstone of sustainable development and good governance in Sierra Leone.

For further enquiries, the ACC advised the public to reach out to its Public Relations Office, as it continues to provide accurate and timely information on its activities and ongoing investigations.
