Former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has issued his first official statement following the discontinuance of treason charges against him, expressing gratitude to President Julius Maada Bio, the Government of Sierra Leone, ECOWAS leaders and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their roles in bringing the matter to a close.
In a statement released from Abuja, Nigeria, on Tuesday, Koroma said he received the Attorney-General’s announcement with gratitude, describing the decision to discontinue the criminal proceedings as one made in accordance with the laws of Sierra Leone.
The former President thanked God for sustaining him and his family throughout what he described as a difficult period, saying his faith remained anchored in the belief that peace, justice and reconciliation would always triumph over adversity.
In a notable gesture, Koroma acknowledged President Julius Maada Bio and the Government of Sierra Leone for their roles in resolving the matter, stating that their actions, guided by the Constitution and the rule of law, had contributed to bringing the case to its conclusion.
He also extended profound appreciation to the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray and former Heads of State for their commitment to peace, dialogue and regional stability throughout the process.
Koroma reserved special appreciation for Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, praising his leadership, personal commitment and steadfast support. He also thanked the Government and people of Nigeria, as well as National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for the hospitality, friendship and generosity extended to him since his arrival in Abuja for medical treatment.
Reflecting on the development, the former President urged Sierra Leoneans to continue placing national interest above personal or political differences, saying the country has overcome greater challenges by building bridges of understanding and strengthening the bonds that unite its people.
He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting every sincere effort that advances peace, strengthens democracy and promotes the welfare of Sierra Leoneans.
Koroma concluded his statement by praying for the nation, declaring, “God bless the Republic of Sierra Leone.”
His statement comes just hours after the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice officially discontinued the criminal proceedings against him, bringing an end to one of the country’s most significant political and legal cases in recent history and clearing the way for his return to Sierra Leone.
