Bastia Michael Highlights Legal Rights And Protections For Women In Sierra Leone’s Armed Forces

Sierra Leonean lawyer Bastia Michael has highlighted the importance of legal protections, gender equality and safeguards against harassment for women serving in the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF).

Michael made the remarks on October 29, 2026, while participating as a panellist at a symposium organised by the RSLAF Service Women’s Association at JMB Parade Square, Wilberforce.

The symposium, themed “Empowering the Service Women for Leadership, Resilience and Professional Excellence,” brought together distinguished panellists to discuss issues affecting women in the military, particularly their professional advancement, leadership development and resilience.

In her contribution, Michael focused on the legal protections available to service women, their rights concerning gender equality and harassment, and the regulatory policies they need to understand to safeguard their careers and families.

Reflecting on the engagement, she said that although she attended to share her legal knowledge, she left having gained a deeper understanding of the RSLAF and the extraordinary women serving in its ranks.
She particularly acknowledged an insightful presentation by the Chief of Staff, noting that the courage, discipline, patience and sacrifices demanded by military service are often admired without a full appreciation of the challenges faced by personnel.

Michael described the experience as a humbling reminder that behind every military uniform is a human being whose service comes with significant responsibilities and personal sacrifices.
She expressed renewed respect and admiration for the women and men serving in the country’s armed forces.
