Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has appointed magistrate Rémy Nama as President of the country’s Constitutional Council, following the death of the institution’s first president, Clément Atangana.
The appointment was formalised through Presidential Decree No. 2026/334, signed in Yaoundé on Friday, 16 October 2026. The decree states that Nama’s appointment takes effect from the date of signature. The document was published on the official website of the Cameroonian Presidency.

Nama succeeds Atangana, who died on 4 October 2026 in Paris at the age of 85, after leading the Constitutional Council since its effective establishment in 2018. His death left a vacancy at the head of an institution with a central role in Cameroon’s constitutional and electoral processes.
Before his appointment, Nama served within the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, where he held responsibilities relating to legal and judicial affairs. His background in the presidential administration places him among officials familiar with the country’s legal and institutional framework.
The Constitutional Council is responsible for reviewing the constitutionality of laws and handling electoral disputes within its jurisdiction. It also oversees the regularity of presidential, parliamentary and referendum elections and proclaims the results in accordance with its constitutional mandate.
Nama’s appointment therefore places him at the head of an institution whose decisions can have significant implications for Cameroon’s political landscape, particularly during election periods.
In a separate decree, numbered 2026/333 and also dated 16 October, the presidency announced appointments to fill vacancies among the Council’s members, including the appointment of Abdoulaye Daouda. The changes follow the deaths of Atangana and Council member Bah Oumarou Sanda, who died in August.
The appointments mark a new chapter for the Constitutional Council as it continues its work under new leadership. Attention will now turn to the transition process and how the institution carries out its constitutional responsibilities.
The decree appointing Nama states that it is to be published through an urgent procedure before inclusion in Cameroon’s Official Gazette in French and English.
