The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) has commenced a new round of political consultations, formally inviting registered political parties to strategic meetings as part of preparations for the 2028 General Elections.
In an official communication dated March 16, 2026, the Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman, Edmond Sylvester Alpha, notified the leadership of the All Peoples Congress (APC) of his assumption of office and outlined plans to engage political stakeholders across the country.
The letter, addressed to the APC chairman in Freetown, emphasized Alpha’s commitment to upholding fairness, professionalism, and inclusivity in the electoral process. He acknowledged the weight of responsibility entrusted to him, noting that the Commission must continue to serve as a “beacon of fairness and professionalism” for the people of Sierra Leone.
According to the ECSL boss, the engagement forms part of a broader initiative to strengthen collaboration with political actors and ensure transparency in electoral management. He explained that the meetings will provide an opportunity to share his vision for the Commission, update parties on ongoing activities, and discuss the strategic roadmap toward the 2028 polls.
“In line with my commitment to inclusive electoral management, I am embarking on a series of engagements with all registered political parties,” the letter stated.
The Commission has proposed that meetings be held at its headquarters in Freetown at mutually convenient times between March 23 and April 10, 2026.
Political observers say the move signals an early start to electoral preparations and may help rebuild trust among stakeholders following concerns that often trail electoral cycles in the country.
The letter was also copied to the Political Parties Regulation Commission, underscoring the institutional collaboration expected in managing party relations and electoral conduct.
The ECSL’s outreach is widely seen as a step toward fostering dialogue, reducing tensions, and ensuring a smoother path to the next general elections.
