President Bio Holds “Productive” Talks With IMF Managing Director

President Julius Maada Bio has described his meeting with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, as “productive and collaborative.”

President Bio met with Georgieva and her team in Washington to review Sierra Leone’s economic progress and the reforms being undertaken by government.

Writing after the meeting, the President said both sides agreed to build on the gains already made.

“We agreed to build on the economic progress our country has made as we continue implementing key reforms,” President Bio said.

He thanked the IMF for its “ongoing partnership and support” to Sierra Leone.

The meeting comes weeks after IMF staff and the Sierra Leonean authorities reached a Staff-Level Agreement on the third review of the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) – a 38-month arrangement worth about US$253 million – and a proposed Resilience and Sustainability Facility.

The programme supports government’s efforts to reduce debt vulnerabilities, bring down inflation, rebuild foreign reserves, strengthen governance and advance goals under the Medium-Term National Development Plan 2024-2030.

The IMF has previously welcomed Sierra Leone’s stabilisation efforts, pointing to easing inflation, more stable exchange rates and improved access to credit for the private sector.
