Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), succeeding Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio at the conclusion of the regional bloc’s summit.
Faye’s emergence comes at a critical time for the 15-member regional bloc as it continues to confront political instability, terrorism, economic integration challenges and efforts to restore stronger cooperation across West Africa.
As Chairman, President Faye is expected to lead ECOWAS’ efforts to strengthen regional security, promote democratic governance, accelerate economic integration and advance dialogue aimed at addressing the political and security challenges facing the sub-region.
President Julius Maada Bio, who assumed the rotating chairmanship in June 2025, completed his one-year tenure after leading the bloc through a period marked by regional security concerns and diplomatic engagements focused on preserving peace and constitutional order across West Africa.
President Faye, who assumed office as Senegal’s president in April 2024, is widely regarded as one of Africa’s youngest reform-oriented leaders. His election places him at the forefront of efforts to deepen regional cooperation, foster stability and reinforce ECOWAS’ role in addressing the complex political and economic issues confronting the region.
An official communiqué from the ECOWAS summit is expected to outline the priorities of the new Chairman for the coming year.
