London, United Kingdom – As part of its ongoing community outreach, H.E. Dr. Morie Komba Manyeh and the staff of the Sierra Leone High Commission paid a courtesy visit to Cllr Eddie Hanson, the Mayor of Camden, at the Camden Civic Building in central London. The visit provided an opportunity for renewed dialogue, strengthened relations, and mutual inspiration between the Sierra Leonean diplomatic mission and the leadership of one of the UK’s most diverse and vibrant boroughs.
Mayor Hanson, originally from Sierra Leone, guided the delegation through the civic building, explaining the workings of local governance from the main council chamber to halls dedicated to the registration of births, marriages, and other civic functions. He shared moving reflections on his journey from Sierra Leonean refugee to becoming the first Mayor of Camden of Black African descent, expressing a poignant regret that his father did not live to witness his ascent to this significant role and affirming that everything he does honors his father’s belief in him.
In his remarks, H.E. Dr. Morie Manyeh praised the Mayor’s dedication and resilience, describing him as “a living testament to Sierra Leone’s enduring spirit of resilience and excellence” and noting that his story embodies the power of perseverance and shared Sierra Leonean values.
Mrs. Yvonne King Odigboh, Deputy High Commissioner, expressed admiration for Mayor Hanson’s commitment to community empowerment, emphasizing that his journey will continue to inspire generations to believe that humble beginnings can lead to meaningful impact when guided by purpose and integrity.
The visit highlighted the High Commission’s ongoing dedication to strengthening ties within the Sierra Leonean diaspora and fostering partnerships that promote unity, service, and progress across communities in the United Kingdom.
