The Government of Sierra Leone has announced that it is closely monitoring developments following the deadly landslide at the Dar-es-Salam landfill in Gbessia, Conakry, Republic of Guinea, which occurred on August 23, 2026, and reportedly resulted in casualties.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, authorities are working to determine whether any Sierra Leonean nationals were affected by the disaster.
The ministry disclosed that the Sierra Leone Embassy in Guinea is collaborating with relevant Guinean authorities to verify reports suggesting that Sierra Leoneans may be among those impacted by the incident.
As part of ongoing response efforts, the embassy has dispatched a team, including the Deputy Ambassador and the Head of Chancery, to the affected area to assess the situation and provide support where necessary.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as verified information becomes available.
The government also urged concerned citizens to contact the ministry through its designated emergency lines for further information regarding the incident.
