Freetown, Sierra Leone – November 16, 2025:
Authorities at the Freetown International Airport have arrested a Zambian national after suspected cocaine was discovered concealed in her luggage during routine security screening. The incident occurred at approximately 08:30 hours in the Hold Baggage Area, prompting heightened security response at the country’s main international gateway.
The suspect, Miriam Shamane, travelling on a Zambian passport (No. 2Q077540), was preparing to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight when security personnel detected anomalies in her baggage. According to airport sources, a suspicious substance was observed during the standard X-ray screening process, raising immediate red flags.

Following the initial detection, airport authorities activated a coordinated security procedure involving several key national agencies. The detailed search and verification process was conducted in the presence of representatives from the Office of National Security (ONS), the Sierra Leone Police, the National Revenue Authority (NRA) Customs Service Department, the Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA), and Westminster Airport security staff.
During the inspection, substances believed to be cocaine were found concealed within the passenger’s belongings. Officials at the scene confirmed that the suspect remained cooperative as the items were documented, secured, and handed over for further investigation.
In accordance with established protocol, Ms. Shamane, along with her passport and the seized exhibits, was formally transferred to the Sierra Leone Police for continued interrogation and possible prosecution. Authorities note that forensic testing will determine the exact nature and quantity of the substance.
Airport security analysts say this arrest underscores the growing sophistication of drug trafficking attempts and the persistent threat facing international travel hubs. Freetown International Airport, which remains a critical regional transit point, has recorded several interdiction cases in recent years—each reinforcing the need for stronger surveillance and inter-agency collaboration.
A senior official who witnessed the operation praised the coordinated effort, noting that the swift response demonstrates the effectiveness of ongoing security reforms and capacity-building initiatives among Sierra Leone’s border control agencies.
The National Revenue Authority, through its Public Affairs and Tax Education Unit, emphasized the importance of vigilance and encouraged continued public support for security measures designed to protect the nation’s borders.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities reaffirm their commitment to combating drug trafficking networks and ensuring that Sierra Leone remains a secure and respected transit corridor in the region.
