Basita Michael Defends Independent Journalism, Praises Khadija And Mabel For Promoting Public Accountability

Basita Michael has publicly defended independent journalism and critical voices in Sierra Leone, expressing solidarity with Khadija and Mabel amid what she described as attempts to undermine their work through perceived political affiliations.

In a statement shared on X, Michael argued that efforts to define independent media practitioners by their perceived political leanings were not new, describing such tactics as attempts by individuals to conceal insecurities, evade accountability and deflect legitimate criticism.

She maintained that such attempts had never diminished the value of independent voices or their contributions to public discourse.

Michael also acknowledged the efforts of Khadija and Mabel, noting that their work had helped create a platform through which citizens could better understand and engage with issues of national importance.

She said their contributions, courage and commitment were recognised by many Sierra Leoneans across the political spectrum.

“We are proud of you, and of every journalist committed to building platforms where competing views can be heard, difficult questions can be asked, and those who exercise public power can be held accountable,” she stated.

Her message reinforces the importance of independent journalism in a democratic society, where the responsibility of the media extends beyond political affiliations to include informing citizens, questioning authority and holding public officials accountable.

The statement comes as conversations around media independence, political influence and freedom of expression remain important to Sierra Leone’s democratic development.
